Carrara is located in northwestern Italy, to be precise in the Apuan Alps, the northwestern part of Tuscany. A town with around 70,000 inhabitants. For many centuries mainly lived from the Marble industry. From a distance, the area in which this town is located, looks more like a wintersports area, because the mountain peeks seem to be covered with snow. However, nothing is less true. What we see in the distance are the famous marble mountain peaks hiding the marble quarries with the "white gold" of Carrara. And they are more than worth a visit.
Different colors
Marble. It is available in different types and colors. The word is derived from the Greek word "Marmeros" which means "shiny stone".
Michelangelo
The story is well-known: Michelangelo searched and bought the marble blocks for his famous master sculptures, to be precise in the "Cave di Fantiscritti". From this rock-hard material, he cut his famous statues, such as the Pièta and the David.

De marmeren bergtoppen van Carrara:
Toscaanse marmerhoofdstad van de wereld.
In het noordwesten van Italië, om precies te zijn in de Apuaanse Alpen, het Noordwestelijke deel van Toscane, ligt Carrara. Een stadje dat ongeveer 70.000 inwoners telt en al eeuwen leeft van de marmerindustrie. Vanaf een afstand heeft het gebied waarin dit plaatsje ligt, meer weg van een wintersportgebied, omdat de bergtoppen met sneeuw bedekt lijken te zijn. Niets is echter minder waar. Wat we in de verte zien zijn de beroemde marmeren bergtoppen met de marmergroeves waarin het ‘witte goud’ van Carrara schuilgaat. En die zijn een bezoek meer dan waard.
Verschillende kleuren
Marmer. Het is er in verschillende soorten en kleuren. Het woord is afgeleid van het Griekse woord ‘Marmeros’ wat ‘glanzende steen’ betekent. Kalksteen dat door enorme druk- en temperatuurverschillen omgevormd is tot marmer.
Michelangelo
Het verhaal is bekend: Michelangelo zocht en kocht hier de marmerblokken voor zijn beroemde meesterbeeldhouwwerken, om precies te zijn in de ‘Cave di Fantiscritti’.
